We find the number and sizes of launches at present in the possession of the Government to be as follows:-
Victoria 27 tons
Charles Mary - 24 tons
"Stilda" 12 "
"Blanche" 12 "
In addition to these six launches, it is intended to add two small Steam launches (of 10 tons each) to the Harbour Department to replace rowing boats now used; when the Colony will be in possession of eight light Steam launches.
The second point which suggests itself is as to the nature of the duties which such a force will have to perform. On this point, Mape Mulloy, R. E., says: "I am of opinion that the launches Victoria and Charles May cannot be used as Miner's or vessels carrying submarine mines. They are not large enough and
